Nowakowski Scores Two Third Period Goals as Men’s Hockey Goes Unbeaten for the Weekend

(csssaints.com) – With the St. Scholastica men's hockey team trailing going into the third period, junior captain Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) netted a pair of goals as the Saints defeated Marian University (Wis.) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in the MCHA/NCHA Thanksgiving Showcase.

The first 30 minutes of the contest would go scoreless until the Sabres got on the board with 9:43 left in the second period on a Matt Berger power-play goal. That would be the score at the second intermission with the Sabres holding a slight edge in shots 25-22.

The third period belonged to the Saints as they would out-shoot Marian 15-7. Nowakowski scored the equalizer on the power-play less than four minutes into the period. His brother, Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ), and Brenden Kotyk (Regina, Saskatchewan/Michael A. Riffel HS (Dauphin-MJHL) ) had the assists.

Then with less than four minutes remaining in the period Nowakowski had the game winner with 3:48 left to make the final score 2-1. Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) and Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) were credited with the assists. For the weekend, Nowakowski finished with four goals and two assists.

Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 31 saves to earn the win for the Saints. Randy Willis had 35 saves in the loss for the Sabres (4-5-1). Both teams committed six penalties and both were 1-for-6 on the power-play.

The Saints (3-5-0) will be back in conference action next weekend when they will be at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Action begins Friday at 7:05 p.m. All of the action can be heard live on Saints Sports Net.
