Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team scored two goals in the final 25 seconds to earn a 4-4 tie against Hamline University Tuesday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
Hamline struck first as Haley Johnson found the back of the net off of an assist from Corinne Henning and Jess Hunt six minutes into the contest for the only goal of the first period.
In the second period, the Saints fired back as
Gina Dodge (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) scored off of an assist from
Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) and
Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS) to tie the game at 1-1. The Pipers quickly regained the lead, however, as Ashley Maskel converted on the Jess Hunt assist to give Hamline a 2-1 lead headed into the final period.
The Saints battled back in the third, tying the game at 2-2 as
Briana Stephens (Chicago, Ill./Hopkins HS (Minn.)) scored an unassisted goal with 13 minutes left. The Pipers refused to back down, as Chelsey Koehn scored a power-play goal less than a minute later. Jordan Verleye and Haley Johnson were credited with the assists.
Koehn would also tally an assist and Johnson would tally her second assist of the period as they found Corinne Henning to give Hamline a 4-2 lead with 2:38 remaining.
The Saints would pull the goalie shortly after and would rally in the final minute of the third period as
Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)) found
Alana Levido (Richmond, British Columbia/Burnaby North Secondary (Pacific Steelers)), who tallied the Saints third goal of the contest to bring the Saints within one with 25 seconds left.
Then with nine seconds left and after a Piper penalty, the Saints tied the game after winning the faceoff and
Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS) put the puck in the net on the doorstep with five seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) had the assist.
The overtime period would go scoreless as the Saints salvaged the tie against the Pipers 4-4. This was the first meeting between the two programs.
Sheridan Friesen (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Ontario Hockey Academy) made 21 saves in the contest for the Saints, who move to 2-1-2 on the year. For Hamline, Kaley Gibson made 43 saves as the Pipers move to 1-4-1 on the year.
The Saints will have a home game away from home next Tuesday when they face Saint Mary's University in Hastings, Minn. The game will feature sisters
Jordy Klimek (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) for the Saints and Mackenzie Klimek for the Cardinals, who both went to Hastings High School. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m.
