Rob Johnson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS),
Brandon Scott (Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS), and
Ethan Walpole (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) all netted hat tricks in the St. Scholastica men's soccer team's 14-0 victory over Northland College on Saturday.
The 14 goals scored set a new program record. The previous record of was 13 goals also against Northland during the 2010 season. CSS came into the contest the NCAA Division III leader in goals scored.
Scoring was ignited by
Andrew Jenkins (Cardiff, Wales/Whitchurch HS) less than two minutes into the contest, his UMAC leading 14th goal of the season.
Sean Morgan (Belfast, Ireland/St. Patrick’s Grammar School) and
Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) were credited with the assists.
After over 30 scoreless minutes,
Sean Morgan (Belfast, Ireland/St. Patrick’s Grammar School) would tally in the 39th minute. The Saints would never look back, scoring a least one goal in each ten minutes that elapsed until the game ended.
Rob Johnson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) would score in the 40th, 42nd, and 46th minutes to complete the natural hat trick. The hat trick spanned five minutes and 39 seconds, which is the ninth fastest in NCAA Division III history.
Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) would then score at 50:43, the assist going to
Antony Blackburn (Derby, England/John Port School), who had two assists in the contest. Watt would also be credited with two assists on the day, which are good for a UMAC high of 13.
Trochimchuk netted a goal at 53:16, scoring was then all
Ethan Walpole (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) and
Brandon Scott (Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) as they would combine to score the next six goals. Walpole tallied in the 59th, 79th, and 80th minutes to earn his hat trick. Scott scored in the 60th minute, and would score the next two goals just five seconds apart in the 84th minute to complete his hat trick.
If he indeed scored five seconds apart that would be a new NCAA Division III record for the fastest consecutive goals by one player.
Adam Wilson (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS) scored in the last minute of the match to close out scoring for the Saints.
Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) would earn the win in goal for the Saints, playing 58 minutes and making two saves.
Bryan Nyberg (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) played 32 minutes and made four saves in the contest.
For the LumberJacks, Colton Schreyer made ten saves, and had four goals against in the first half, and Payton Spracklin would make four saves an have 10 goals against in the second half.
The Saints improve to 8-0-0 in UMAC play, and are 10-2-0 overall. The LumberJacks fall to 0-8-0 in the UMAC, and 0-13-0 overall.
For their next action, the Saints travel to Northfield, Minn. tomorrow to take on 16th-ranked Carleton College for a non-conference match. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
