Andrew Jenkins (Cardiff, Wales/Whitchurch HS) recorded a hat trick and
Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) and
Ben Cullen (Clough, Northern Ireland/Shimna Integrated College) tallied two assists apiece as the St. Scholastica men's soccer team captured the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship outright, defeating Crown College by a score of 5-0 Saturday afternoon.
The game would get off to a physical start, as the Storm committed seven fouls in the first half, and a yellow card was given to Watt in the 31st minute. The game remained scoreless until the 33rd minute, when
Caleb Yurek (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) found the back of the net courtesy of an
Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) corner kick. Shortly after, another yellow card would be given to Crown's Truman Shetler in the 35th minute. Despite nine CSS shots, the score remained just 1-0 at half.
However, the Saints would come out firing after the break, racking up 16 shots in the second half. Jenkins would score back-to-back goals in the 54th and 64th minutes, with Watt assisting on the first and Cullen on the second. Watt and Cullen would both be credited with an assist in the 68th minute on Yurek's second goal of the game, the third goal of the half for the Saints. The Saints' final goal would come just 37 seconds later, as Jenkins completed the hat trick off of Cullen's second assist to push the game to the 5-0 final.
Goalkeeper
Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) made one save for CSS in the win, while Crown keeper Duncan Sloan made seven saves in the loss. The shutout is the ninth of the year for the Saints defense, which is the most of any team in the UMAC.
The Saints remain perfect in UMAC play as they improve to 12-0-0 in the conference, and 14-3-0 overall. The loss gives the Storm a record of 5-5-2 in UMAC play, and a record of 6-8-2 overall.
The Saints' next contest will be Wednesday evening at 6:30 as they take on Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior at Ordean Stadium. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
