Men’s Soccer Downs North Central 8-0; Remain Undefeated in UMAC

| By:
Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) scored twice and Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) added a hat trick of assists as the St. Scholastica men's soccer team received goals from seven different players in its 8-0 rout of UMAC foe North Central University on a windy Thursday afternoon at Saints Field.

The Saints offense found their spark after a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Carleton College last Sunday in which they only mustered 5 shots. The Saints rebounded by outshooting the Rams 36-2 and racking up four goals in each half of the contest.

The Saints wasted no time as Trochimchuk found the back of the net off a Watt assist in the second minute to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. In the fifth minute, Antony Blackburn (Derby, England/John Port School) and Watt were credited with the assist to the UMAC points leader Andrew Jenkins (Cardiff, Wales/Whitchurch HS) for his 15th goal of the season.

Just a few minutes after the Saints picked up a 2-0 lead, Trochimchuk netted an unassisted goal in the seventh minute to push the lead to 3-0. The Saints would add another goal to push their first half lead to 4-0 as Rob Johnson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) tallied his eighth goal of the season off of another Watt-Blackburn combo assist.

The Saints refused to let up in the second half, as Watt scored a penalty kick in the 51st minute, giving him five points on the afternoon. Less than ten minutes later, Sean Morgan (Belfast, Ireland/St. Patrick’s Grammar School) made it 6-0 as Jenkins was credited with the assist. The Saints would also receive a pair of goals in the closing minutes of the half from Shay Rabbers (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Brandon Scott (Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS). Ethan Walpole (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) was credited with two assists, and Kyran Davis was credited with an assist on the Rabbers goal.

The Scholastica defense turned in another solid performance as Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) made just one save in the shut out win for St. Scholastica. This marks the seventh shutout on the year for the Scholastica defense, their sixth in the last seven games. Rams keeper Nathan Kraines made eight saves in allowing eight goals.

The Saints have dominated conference competition so far this year, outscoring UMAC opponents 64-3 so far this season. The Rams fall to 4-9-1 overall and 2-7-0 in the conference.

The Saints (11-3, 9-0-0 UMAC) will hit the road this weekend as they take on UMAC rival Northwestern this Saturday in St. Paul at noon.
