MANCHESTER, N.H. – For the second time this week, the St. Scholastica women's hockey team would get a game-winning goal in the final 20 seconds of regulation as
Angela Schlieske (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) put in the game-winner with 17 seconds left to give the Saints the 4-3 victory over Salve Regina University (R.I.) on Saturday afternoon.
Today's game was the second and final game for the Saints at the Saint Anselm College (N.H.) Invitational. All of the games are played at Sullivan Arena on the campus of Saint Anselm.
After a relatively quiet first period which saw the Saints hold a 6-5 lead in shots, CSS got on the board a minute into the second period as
Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS) scored her second goal in the last 24 hours.
Jordy Klimek (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) had the assist. The Seahawks would tie the game on a Rachel Porter power-play goal at the 12 minute-mark to make it 1-1 at the second intermission.
The third period would see five goals combined between the two teams. Schlieske scored her first goal of the period with 14 minutes left after a great pass in front by
Michelle Fischer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall).
Alana Levido (Richmond, British Columbia/Burnaby North Secondary (Pacific Steelers)) also had an assist.
Courtney Esse (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS (UW-Superior)) then scored with nine minutes left to extend the lead to 3-1. Fischer and
Briget Cojocar (Limerick, Saskatchewan/Lafleche HS (Melville Prairie Fire)) had the assists.
The Seahawks, however, would respond with a pair of goals 36 seconds apart in the final five minutes to tie the contest at 3-3.
In the final minute after a pair of matching minor penalties and 4-on-4 hockey, Schlieske brought the puck into the Seahawks zone and ripped a slap shot from the point past the goaltender to give the Saints the 4-3 lead with 17 seconds left. CSS would go on to win its sixth game this season by a 4-3 score.
The Saints out-shot the Seahawks 21-19 in the game.
Shannon Connolly (Toronto, Ontario/Havergal College) earned the win in net for the Saints, stopping 16 shots. Rebecca Simmons had 17 saves in the loss for Salve Regina (5-4-2).
The Saints (9-3-1) will be in Minnesota for action next weekend when they travel to Augsburg College for a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's action is set to begin at 7 p.m.
