DULUTH, Minn. – Senior goalkeeper Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) picked up his 30th career shutout to tie a program mark and freshman Andrew Jenkins (Cardiff, Wales/Whitchurch HS) scored twice as the St. Scholastica men's soccer team defeated Bethany Lutheran College 5-0 Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.

Reed, who already owns the record for shutouts in a season (13-2010), tied the career mark today with his 30th shutout. He is now tied with former Saint Adam Whitehead (2004-07).

The Saints got on the scoreboard 11 minutes into today game as Brandon Stemwedel (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) played a nice ball forward to Andrew Jenkins (Cardiff, Wales/Whitchurch HS) and he beat the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

It remained that way until the 39th minute when after Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) hit the post, Braeden Hidalgo-Mazzei (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Kildonan East Collegiate) got the carom and put it in the net for his first collegiate goal to make it 2-0. That was the score at the half as CSS out-shot Bethany Lutheran 13-3 in the half and controlled possession.

St. Scholastica then put the game away in the first 10 minutes of the second half, putting three balls into the net in the first nine minutes and 15 seconds.

Kyle Farrar (Sevenoaks, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) got things started three minutes into the second half with his fifth goal of the season to make it 3-0. Trochimchuk had the assist. In the 52nd minute, Jenkins stole the ball from the BLC goalkeeper and drilled in his second of the day into the empty net to make it 4-0.

The final tally of the day came from Trochimchuk, who this time received a pass from Farrar to make the final score 5-0. The Saints have now outscored their first three Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opponents by a combined score of 20-1.

Reed had five saves in the shutout. Noah Heidorn made four saves in the loss for Bethany Lutheran. The Saints had a 25-8 shot advantage on the Vikings (3-3-0, 1-1-0 UMAC) and for the second consecutive day had a 10-1 corners edge.

The Saints (6-1-0, 2-0-0 UMAC) will be on the road next Friday for a matchup against the University of Minnesota-Morris. The Cougars were picked to finish second in the UMAC, according to the preseason coaches poll, and have been the main rivals for the Saints recently. That game is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m.
