DULUTH, Minn. – Sophomore
Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) registered his first collegiate hat trick in the St. Scholastica men's soccer team's 10-1 victory over Martin Luther College on Friday afternoon at Saints Field.
This was the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) home opener for the Saints and conference opener for the Knights (0-5-0, 0-1-0 UMAC).
It wasn't long before the Saints got the scoring started as Watt recorded his first goal of the game only two minutes and 24 seconds into the contest to make it 1-0.
Ace Amin (Vasteras, Sweden/Rudbeckianska Gym) and
Kyle Farrar (Sevenoaks, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) had the assists.
Brandon Stemwedel (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) scored his third of the season three minutes and six seconds later off a rebound on a shot from
Andrew Jenkins (Cardiff, Wales/Whitchurch HS) to make it 2-0. Just over two minutes later
Kyle Farrar (Sevenoaks, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) netted his third of the season with an assist from
Ace Amin (Vasteras, Sweden/Rudbeckianska Gym).
In the 22nd minute
Bryan Olson (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS) scored on a header off of a Stemwedel corner for his first of the season and second collegiate goal to make it 4-0.
The Knights ruined the shutout in the 31st minute after the Saints had some miscommunication on back pass to the goalkeeper and Ryan Lemke walked the ball in the net to make the score 4-1.
However,
Rob Johnson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) scored goals one minute and 14 seconds apart at the end of the first half as the Saints led 6-1 at the break.
In the second half, Jenkins scored his second of the season and Farrar had his second goal of the game to extend the margin to 8-1. Watt then had the final two goals of the game to complete the hat trick with the first coming on a free kick just outside of box and bending it inside the near post to make the final score 10-1.
Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) picked up the win for the Saints, making four saves, but he remains one away from the program's career shutout record. Sophomore
Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) also saw action for the Saints and made a pair of saves. Ben Zietlow had eights saves in the loss for the Knights. CSS outshot Martin Luther 32-9 in the game and had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Saints (5-1-0, 2-0-0 UMAC) will be at home again tomorrow when they face Bethany Lutheran College in a conference matchup. The kickoff is scheduled for noon at Saints Field. It will be the last home game for the Saints until October 7th.
