MINNEAPOLIS – For the 15th straight year, the St. Scholastica women's tennis team won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship, which took place at the Baseline Tennis Center.

The Saints won all nine flights for the second consecutive year to claim the maximum 27 points. The University of Minnesota, Morris finished in second place with 12 points.

Doubles teams took to the court on Friday. The No. 1 team of Danni Sonnenfeld (Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) and Callee Conda (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (UW-Green Bay)) won their 12th and 13th matches in a row to capture the No. 1 flight title for the second consecutive year. The duo defeated both Northwestern College in the semifinals and the University of Minnesota, Morris in the championship by matching 8-5 scores.

The team of Ali Bernst (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) and Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) captured the No. 2 doubles flight championship. The team defeated Martin Luther 8-3 in the semifinals and then shutout Bethany Lutheran in the championship 8-0.

Finally, the tandem of Liz Coyne (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) and Jill Kammerer (St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) won the No. 3 doubles flight title. The team defeated Minnesota, Morris in the semifinals and Northwestern in the finals each by 8-2 scores.

On Saturday, CSS had little trouble winning the six singles flights. Conda at No. 1 singles had the hardest fight in the championship match against Abby Fragodt of Minnesota, Morris. Conda shut out her opponent in the semifinals, but was forced to a third set super-breaker in the championship match, prevailing 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, (10-4). It is her third consecutive UMAC singles title.

Sonnenfeld dropped just two games overall on her way to the No. 2 singles flight title. She defeated Amy Knight of Northwestern 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match. Sonnenfeld also wins her third consecutive conference singles championship.

If the Saints don't play another match this year, Sonnenfeld will finish with the program's best career singles winning percentage (.789) and with the third-most singles wins in program history (56).

Milly Che Leon (Lima, Peru/Enrique Meiggs ) won the No. 3 singles flight title after defeating Karina Luthra of Martin Luther 6-2, 6-1 in the championship. Amanda Hiatt (St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) blanked her opponent in the championship to win the No. 4 singles flight. Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) won 6-2, 6-2 over Hannah Janke of Martin Luther for the No. 5 singles flight championship. Finally, Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) won the No. 6 singles flight title 6-0, 6-1 over Leah Hogle of Northwestern.

For Che Leon, Hiatt, Bungarden, and Lawrence it was all their first UMAC singles championship. Bungarden has won 20 straight matches.

The Saints have an outside shot, albeit slim, at getting a bid into the NCAA Tournament. With a 20-4 record and three of the four losses coming against teams currently ranked regionally, one must think that the Saints would be considered. CSS had made the NCAA Tournament three consecutive years prior to last year, including winning a first round match against Luther College in 2009.

If the Saints are not selected the collegiate careers of Danni Sonnenfeld (Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) and Callee Conda (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (UW-Green Bay)) will come to a close. For future CSS women's tennis news, check out csssaints.com.
