Softball Ends Florida Trip with Split

CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Scholastica softball team dropped the first game of the day to SUNY-Plattsburgh 12-0 in five innings, but ended the trip by defeating Wisconsin Lutheran College 8-0 in five innings in game two on Saturday.

To open the day, defensive lapses and the lack of offense hurt the Saints in a 12-0 loss to SUNY-Plattsburgh. The game ended in five innings. CSS managed just two hits and committed five errors.

The Cardinals (10-1) scored two runs in the first and one run in the second with two of the three runs being unearned. It remained that score until the top of the fourth when Plattsburgh exploded for nine runs. The Saints committed three errors in the inning. Five of the nine runs were unearned.

In the second game, the Saints reversed their fortunes and defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 8-0 in five innings to complete their spring break trip.

After a scoreless first two innings, #Merryssa Tiedeman# got things going by leading off the bottom of the third with a triple and then scored on a #Jordan Spiering# RBI-single. After a walk, #Tiffany Hudack# hit her first collegiate home run with a three-run blast to make it 4-0.

CSS got two more runs in the fourth as Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) scored on a wild pitch and then her sister, #Allison Spiering#, followed with a RBI-double to make it 6-0.

The Saints ended the game in five innings after Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth to make the final score 8-0.

#Jen Falk# struck out five and allowed just two hits in five innings to pick up the victory. Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to pace the Saints offensively. The Warriors fell to 3-6 with the loss. The Saints finished 4-6 in Florida and are now 5-7 overall.

The Saints will return to the region, but will not face Division III competition next weekend as they will face Winona State University in a doubleheader on Saturday in Winona. The Warriors are currently ranked eighth in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II poll. The doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m.
