CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Scholastica softball team faced two solid opponents on Friday, handing Ripon College (Wis.) its first loss of the season, 6-3, but falling to 24th-ranked SUNY-Cortland 9-1 in five innings.
In the first game, the Saints (4-6) gave Ripon its first loss of the season with a 6-3 victory over the Red Hawks (8-1). CSS struck right a way when #Merryssa Tiedeman# led off the game with a triple and scored off an error. Tiedeman came through again in the third inning with a RBI-single to plate #Kayla Jenkins# to make it 2-0 CSS.
After the Red Hawks scored a run off a Saints error in the bottom of the third, the Saints got that run back in the fourth when #Shauney Moen# stole home.
St. Scholastica made it a 6-1 game in the top of the sixth, by scoring three runs in the inning. #Theresa Tauer#'s RBI double followed #Bonnie Kowalczyk#'s double to lead off the inning. #Brittni Johnson# also drove in a run in the inning and
Kayla Jenkins (Esko, Minn/Esko HS) performed a squeeze bunt for the third run.
Ripon hung around by hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, but #Darcy Roach# kept the Red Hawks in check the rest of the way to earn the complete-game victory by a final score of 6-3.
Roach struck out five and allowed five hits to improve to 3-0 on the season. Tiedeman and #Rachel Perushek# each went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Saints offensively.
In the second game of the day, the Saints fell behind early to 24th-ranked SUNY-Cortland and wound up losing 9-1 in five innings.
The Saints committed three errors in the top of the first inning, which led to three unearned runs. The Red Dragons (7-2) also hit a two-run home run in the inning to lead 5-0 after one.
Cortland added another run in the second and then plated three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-0 lead.
The Saints tried to keep the game going in the bottom of the frame as a
Kayla Jenkins (Esko, Minn/Esko HS) RBI-double plated
Shauney Moen (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) to make it 9-1. However, that is the only run they got in the inning and that is how the game ended after five innings.
#Jen Falk# struck out six in five innings, but received the loss.
Kayla Jenkins (Esko, Minn/Esko HS) had two of the three hits for the Saints, both of which were doubles.
There has been a scheduled change to tomorrow as now the Saints will play SUNY-Plattsburgh and Wisconsin Lutheran College to finish up action in Florida. The Plattsburgh game will get underway at 8:30 a.m. local time with the Wisconsin Lutheran game to follow.
