CLERMONT, Fla. – For the third time this season, the St. Scholastica softball team has had to settle for split on the day as it fell to Fitchburg State (Mass.) 5-2 in the first game, but responded with a 4-0 victory over Pine Manor (Mass.) on Tuesday.
In the first game of the day, the Saints (3-3) were only able to muster three hits in a 5-2 loss to Fitchburg State. The Falcons (2-1) had a RBI-double in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Fitchburg added to that lead in the second, scoring three runs after the Saints committed two errors.
After CSS stranded the bases loaded in the fourth, the Saints got on the board in the fifth when #Allison Spiering# scored on her sister, #Jordan Spiering#'s double. #Merryssa Tiedeman# then had some heads up base running tagging up from third to score after the first baseman caught the ball in foul territory and no one covered home plate.
However, that is all the Saints would get in the game as they left two runners on in the fifth and did not get a runner on base in either the sixth or seventh innings to make the final 5-2.
#Brittni Johnson# picked up the loss for St. Scholastica, striking out four in six innings of work.
Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) had two of the three hits for the Saints.
In game two, the Saints managed six hits, but solid pitching by #Darcy Roach# shut down Pine Manor (0-5) for the 4-0 victory.
The game was scoreless going into the fourth inning when #Tiffany Hudack# belted a RBI-triple and then later scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 CSS. It remained that score until the top of the seventh when with two outs
Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) belted a two-run home run over the centerfield wall to make the final score 4-0.
Roach struck out 10 and allowed just four hits (two in the first, two in the seventh) to earn her first complete game shutout and improve to 2-0 on the year. Six different Saints had hits in the game.
The Saints will face Babson College (Mass.) and SUNY-Geneseo tomorrow with the Babson game starting at 12:30 p.m. local time.
