CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Scholastica softball team started Monday in the Sunshine State on a good note with a 5-1 victory over New England College (N.H.), but had defensive miscues in a 9-0 loss for Fairleigh Dickinson University at Florham (N.J.) in the nightcap.
The spring trip opener against the Pilgrims (1-2) got off to a great start for the Saints (2-2) as #Merryssa Tiedeman# led the game off with a triple. She then scored on a #Bonnie Kowalczyk# single to make it 1-0 CSS.
New England drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the third to tie the game up. Then in the fifth it was Tiedeman again who got the rally started by leading the inning off with a double. After a sacrifice, Kowalcyzk hit a RBI-single to give the Saints the lead for good. #Theresa Tauer# came up next and had a RBI-triple to score Kowalczyk and make it 3-1.
Tiedeman gave the Saints insurance in the sixth with a two-run double to make the final score 5-1.
#Brittni Johnson# went the distance on the mound, scattering six hits in seven innings. Tiedeman and Kowalczyk each went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
In game two against the Devils (1-1), the Saints could not get the bats going and made numerous errors in a 9-0 loss that ended in six innings by way of the eight-run rule.
Florham scored two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. It remained that way until the top of the fifth when the CSS defense fell apart and committed four errors, which led to four runs. It was the same situation in the top of the sixth when the Saints committed three errors, which led to three runs to make it 9-0. The Saints were unable to extend the game in the bottom half and the game ended 9-0.
Offensively, the Saints managed just four hits and struck out 11 times in the game. #Jen Falk# suffered the loss for the Saints.
The Saints will be back in action tomorrow with games against Fitchburg State College (Mass.) and Pine Manor College (Mass.). The Fitchburg State game will begin at 8:30 a.m. local time and the Pine Manor game will be played at 12:30 p.m.
