DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team fell by a one-goal score for the second straight game against Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) rival Wis.-Stevens Point on Saturday afternoon by a 3-2 final.
CSS falls to 7-12-1 (5-9-1 NCHA), and every game will be must-win from here on out if the Saints want to advance into the NCHA O'Brien Cup tournament. Stevens Point improves to 12-6-1 (8-6-1 NCHA).
The Pointers scored early in the first as they did in last night's contest, this time as Erin Marvin netted her first of two goals on the evening. Last night's goal scorer, Dana Carothers, and Megan Nickelson had the assists.
CSS came back to tie the game with just 45 seconds remaining in the period while on the powerplay, as #Libby Guzzo# netted her team-leading seventh of the year, with assists by #Jordan Klimek# and #Kiana Leisz#.
Less than ten seconds later, Marvin netted her second of the game to put the Pointers back on top. Carothers once again earned the assist.
The score held until the third period, and with the Saints on the powerplay, Allie Tanzer was able to score her 16th goal of the season to extend the Pointers' lead to two. Cassandra Salmen had the assist.
CSS was able to make a late-game surge, scoring one goal with their goaltender pulled for an extra skater. Klimek was able to tip in a pass from Guzzo to finish with a two-point night.
Once again, Staci Pomering earned the win in-net for the Pointers, making 19 saves on 21 shots. #Rachel Borchardt# took the tough-luck loss for CSS, making 17 saves on 20 UWSP shots.
CSS finished with five penalties for 10 minutes while the Pointers finished with seven for 17. The Saints finished one-for-seven on powerplay opportunities while taking seven shots. Point finished scoreless on four chances.
The Saints will take part in a critical two-game series next weekend when they travel to face fellow first-year program St. Norbert College. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
