EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Captain
Michelle Fischer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) scored with just 22 seconds left in regulation to give the St. Scholastica women's hockey team another 4-3 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Sunday afternoon.
Much like yesterday's game, the Blugolds struck first early as Toni Simones scored just one minute and 15 seconds into the game to give UWEC a 1-0 lead.
However, the Saints quickly responded as
Angela Schlieske (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) scored her first of the season 43 seconds later to tie it up.
Jordy Klimek (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) and
Briana Stephens (Chicago, Ill./Hopkins HS (Minn.)) had the assists. CSS then took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission as Klimek netted her first of the year.
Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) and
Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)) had the assists.
After the Blugolds tied it up midway through the second period, the Saints went back ahead less than two minutes later on a
Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) goal. Fischer had the assist.
St. Scholastica held a 3-2 lead until the Blugolds tied it on a Dani Kerr goal with less than eight minutes to go in the third period. But the Saints pulled through late again as Fischer scored her third goal of the series and her second straight game-winner with 22 seconds left to give CSS the 4-3 victory.
Cara McMannis (Holland, Manitoba/Treherne Collegiate Institute (Pembina Valley Hawks)) had the assist.
The Blugolds out-shot the Saints 34-32, but the Saints had the edge in the third period 15-7. In her first collegiate start,
Sheridan Friesen (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Ontario Hockey Academy) made 31 saves to get the victory for CSS. Mara Stormer had 28 saves in the loss for the Blugolds.
The Saints will have their home opener next weekend when the fifth-ranked University of Wisconsin-River Falls visits Mars Lakeview Arena for a weekend series. The action begins Friday night at 7 p.m. and can be seen live on csssaints.com.
