EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team could not make it three straight wins on Friday night, falling 5-1 to 15th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at the Hobbs Ice Arena.
The Blugolds would get a pair of goals in the opening period to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Andrew Wilcox scored eight minutes into the period and AndrewMcCabe scored with 1:31 left in the period. Both were even-strength goals.
Eau Claire extended its lead to 3-0 with six minutes left in the second period on a Jordan Singer goal. The Saints got on the board later in the period as
Carter Davis (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Central Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored with over two minutes to play to make it 3-1 at the second intermission.
Jeremy Dawes (Winnipeg, Manitoba/College Jeanne Suave (Portage-MJHL) ) and
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) had the assists.
Jared Williams put the margin back to three after scoring 31 seconds into the third period. Jordan Singer scored his second of the game later in the period to make the final score 5-1.
The Blugolds out-shot the Saints 44-34.
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 39 saves in the loss for the Saints, while Brandon Stephenson had 33 saves in the victory.
The Saints (2-2-2, 0-2-1 NCHA) and Blugolds (4-1-0, 2-1-0 NCHA) will face each other again tomorrow, this time at Mars Lakeview Arena. The puck drops at 7 p.m. and can be seen live at csssaints.com.
