PREVIEW: Soccer Teams Set to Host UMAC Tournament Semifinals on Tuesday

 DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's and women's soccer teams will host Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Semifinal games on Tuesday at Saints Field. The men will face Crown College and the women Bethany Lutheran College.

The Saints defeated Northwestern College on Saturday 1-0 in the regular season finale. Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) scored the lone goal for the Saints in the win.

The Saints enter the UMAC Tournament having won six straight games … CSS captured its second straight UMAC regular season title on Friday and their 14th overall … The Saints allowed just two goals in conference play all season … In the two regular season contests against Crown, the Saints outshot the Storm 31-10 … Brandon Stemwedel (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) and Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) scored in both games vs. the Storm … Freshman Kyle Farrar (Sevenoaks, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) leads the team with 14 goals and 37 points. The Storm finished in fourth place in the conference … Leading the way for the Storm this year is Jon Schultz who leads the team and is tied for the conference lead with CSS's Farrar with 37 total points … Schultz does lead the conference with 17 goals …  Jason Budish is second on the team with less than half of Schultz's production with 18 points … Chris Scanlon has seen most of the action in net for the Storm with five wins and 54 saves on the year … The Saints and Storm are one and two in the conference, respectively,  in goals scored and assists.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Crown: 24-4-1)
The Saints defeated the Storm on Friday by a score of 2-0 at Saints Field. Brandon Stemwedel (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) and Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) each scored for CSS. These teams last played in 2001 with CSS coming out on top 5-0.

Bethany Lutheran Vikings (8-7-3, 4-5-3 UMAC)
The Vikings come in as the No. 4 seed after finishing with a 4-5-3 conference record … The result that ultimately put them into the postseason tournament was the 2-1 victory over Martin Luther on October 18th … Joelle Pipal leads the Vikings with nine goals and 20 points this season … The nine goals are the third-most in the conference … Alexa Mowery has performed well in net this season … She is ranked second in the conference saves (159) and third in save percentage (.855) … At one point this season, BLC had four straight double overtime games and three straight ties … The Vikings fell in the regular season finale to Minnesota-Morris 2-0.

Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) recorded her second hat trick of the season in the Saints' 5-0 victory over the Vikings 11 days ago in Mankato. This will be the first postseason meeting between the two programs.
