DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica softball team defeated Northland College 6-0 on Sunday at Kenwood Field to win its second consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Postseason Tournament championship and its 14th overall.
The Saints struck early on the LumberJills as #Merryssa Tiedeman# (
So.-Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) led off the game for the Saints with a triple. The triple was the 23rd this season by the Saints, which breaks a program record. Tiedeman then scored on an #Erika Solin# (
Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Central) sacrifice fly.
Still in the bottom of the first, #Brittni Johnson# (
Jr.-Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) had an infield, RBI-single to make it 2-0. #Shannen Schmidt# (
Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) and #Jen Falk# (
Jr.-Altona, Man.) followed with back-to-back singles up the middle to plate two runs as it was 4-0 after one inning.
#Bonnie Kowalczyk# (
Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) added a RBI-double in the bottom of the second to make it 5-0 and in the fourth inning, #Kristin Swartz# (
Sr.-Hermantown, Minn.) hit a solo home run to center to make it 6-0.
That is all
Jen Falk (Altona, Manitoba/W.C. Miller Collegiate (Rainy River CC)) would need on the mound as the 'Jills finished with just three hits, while Falk struck out four in the complete-game shutout victory. Kowalczyk was 3-for-4 with a RBI to lead the Saints offensively.
The Saints' season will end with an overall record of 29-13. CSS will have to say goodbye to seniors
Kristin Swartz (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) and
Erika Solin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS). Both have combined to play in 290 games in a St. Scholastica uniform.
CSS will still have a talented squad returning next year as it will look for its 14th conference regular season championship and 15th tournament title. Next year's tournament will have higher implications as an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament will be on the line. The tournament will once again be hosted by St. Scholastica.
