DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica softball team defeated the University of Minnesota-Morris this morning 11-1 in six innings to wrap up its conference regular season schedule.
The Saints improve to 26-11 overall and finish 19-1 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). CSS clinched the outright regular season title yesterday, its 13th all-time and second consecutive.
Another bit of good news, due to a conference executive decision, St. Scholastica will now host the UMAC Postseason Tournament next Friday and Saturday at Kenwood Field. The tournament was originally scheduled to be hosted by Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D.
In this morning's contest with Minnesota-Morris, the Saints got the bats going in the second inning with a RBI-double by #Brittni Johnson# (
Jr.-Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) and a RBI-single by #Merryssa Tiedeman# (
So.-Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) to make it 2-0. Tiedeman's hit extended her program-record hitting streak to 21 games.
CSS added one more run in the third with a RBI-single by #Theresa Tauer# (
So.-Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata). The margin extended to 7-0 in the fourth as #Erika Solin# (
Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Central), #Kristin Swartz# (
Sr.-Hermantown, Minn.), and Tiedeman all had RBIs in the inning.
After Morris added a run in the fifth, St. Scholastica responded with four in the top of the sixth. Three of the runs came on a Tauer triple down the left field line. #Jen Falk# (
Jr.-Altona, Man.) also had a RBI in the inning as the Saints won in six innings 11-1. The win was the 10th at home this season, which sets a new program record.
Brittni Johnson (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS (Northland CC)) allowed just three hits to earn the complete-game win and improve to 5-0 on the year. Tiedeman was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored and Tauer was 2-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the Saints offensively.
The Saints will wrap-up their regular season on Monday when they face 25th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus in a non-conference doubleheader at the University of Minnesota's Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. The first game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
