DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica softball team opened up the home portion of the 2010 season, and Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play, with a 9-7 victory over the Northland College LumberJills at Kenwood Field.
The Saints improve to 7-10 overall, and 1-0 in the UMAC. The 'Jills fall to 3-13 (0-1 UMAC).
After CSS starting pitcher #Shannen Schmidt# (Fr.- DePere, Wis.) got out of a quick jam in the top of the first, CSS opened up the scoring in the bottom half when a #Theresa Tauer# (So.- Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) single up the middle scored #Erika Solin# (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Central).
Northland jumped on Saints pitching in the second, as the 'Jills put across four runs. CSS was held scoreless in the bottom of the second, and another Northland run in the third put them up 5-1. The Saints chipped away at the Northland lead in the bottom half, as #Merryssa Tiedeman# (So.-Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) came across home on an RBI-groundout by #Kristin Swartz# (Sr.- Hermantown, Minn.), making it 5-2. Tauer then reached on a fielders' choice, and a double steal scored Solin. Northland led 5-3 after three.
CSS held Northland scoreless through three consecutive innings, paced by the pitching of reliever #Jen Falk# (Jr.- Altona, Man./Rainy River CC). The Saints rallied offensively in the bottom of the fifth when Tauer knocked a three-run home run over left-center field, making the score 6-5 CSS.
In the bottom of the sixth CSS put another three across, with #Betsy Wehseler# (Jr.- Ironton, Minn./Crosby Ironton) scoring on an RBI-groundout by Solin. Swartz added another hit with a triple, scoring Tiedeman. Then Tauer's RBI-groundout to second scored Swartz, making the Saints lead 9-5. The 'Jills mustered two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Saints held on for the 9-7 win.
Tauer went 2-for-4 at the plate, with Swartz going 3-for-4. Tauer had five RBI's on the afternoon. Winning pitcher Falk went five innings, giving up three hits and striking out six. Sam Bona had a home run for Northland.
The Saints will be at home again on Saturday when they host Crown College for a doubleheader at Kenwood Field. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
