ASHLAND, Wis. – The St. Scholastica softball team shut out both Northwestern College and Crown College today at LumberJill Field, on the campus of Northland College, defeating the Eagles 7-0 and the Storm 13-0.

The Saints improve to 23-11 overall and 16-1 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). With the two losses suffered by Northwestern today, the Saints claim at least a share of the UMAC regular season championship. Also, head coach Jen Walter is now just two wins away from her 300th coaching victory.

In game one against Northwestern, #Shannen Schmidt# (Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) allowed just two hits and #Merryssa Tiedeman# (So.-Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) tied a team record with three of the team's six doubles as the Saints won 7-0.

After a Tiedeman double led off the bottom of the first, #Erika Solin# (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Central) singled her in to make it 1-0. Later in the inning, #Theresa Tauer# (So.-Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) doubled and that was followed by a RBI-double by #Bonnie Kowalczyk# (Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) to extend the lead to 2-0.

Kowalczyk added a two-run single in the third to make it 4-0. #Kristin Swartz# (Sr.-Hermantown, Minn.) had a two-run double in the fourth and Tiedeman had a RBI-double in the fifth to make the final score 7-0.

Tiedeman extends her school-record hitting streak to 18 games with the three doubles. Schmidt allowed a hit in the second and the seventh, but did not allow a runner to reach second base. She finished with 10 strikeouts and had no walks.

In the second game against Crown, just like Schmidt, #Kayla Jenkins# (Jr.-Esko, Minn.) allowed just two hits as the Saints won 13-0.

#Rachel Perushek# (Jr.-Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) got things started with a two-run single in the first. #Allison Spiering# (Fr.-Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) scored on a Crown error in the second to make it 3-0.

In the third inning, #Sam Quenette# (So.-Spooner, Wis.) had a RBI-double and later scored on a wild pitch to extend it to 5-0. Quenette scored on another error in the fifth and had a run-scoring single in the sixth as the score was 7-0.

The Saints exploded for six runs in the seventh, taking advantage of three Storm errors in the inning. #Jenny Marinaro# (Fr.-Nashwauk, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin), Perushek, Quenette, and Spiering all had RBI's in the inning to make the final 13-0.

Jenkins struck out seven to earn the complete-game shutout. Sam Quenette (Spooner, Wis./Spooner HS) had a career-high four hits with three RBIs and three runs scored to lead CSS in game two.

The Saints will host the UMAC Crossover this Friday and Saturday. Every team from the conference will be traveling to Duluth as there will be eight games on each of the two days with four being played at CSS's Kenwood Field and four played at UMD's Junction Field each day. The Saints will start with the lone team that has beaten them in conference thus far, Martin Luther College, at 2 p.m. on Friday. They will then face Bethany Lutheran at 4 p.m.
