CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The St. Scholastica softball team fell to Coe (Iowa) College on Saturday afternoon by a 8-0 final in five innings, before turning around and defeating the University of Wis.-Platteville by a 10-1 score, also in five innings at the Coe Softball Tournament. The victory is the Saints' 500th in program history.
#Jen Falk#
(Jr.-Altona, Man.) started on the bump for the Saints in game one against the hosts of Coe College, allowing four runs in the first three innings as the Kohawks mixed small ball with the long ball, laying down a pair of sacrifice bunts, stealing a bag, and depositing two over the outfield fence to take an early lead. #Kayla Jenkins#
(Jr.-Esko, Minn.) took the mound in the fourth to finish out the game for the Saints, and pitched one shutout inning before the Kohawks pulled away in the fifth.
Meanwhile, Ashlee Simon started incredibly dominant for Coe, striking out nine of the first eleven hitters that she faced without a ball leaving the infield through her first four innings.
In the top of the fifth, the Saints finally broke up the no-hitter, loading the bases, but Simon racked up three more strikeouts to maintain her shutout. Sidney Ridout ended the game for the Kohawks in the fifth, knocking the team's third home run of the game, a grand slam, to take an 8-0 lead.
Falk took the loss for the Saints and is now 2-4 on the season. Simon earned the shutout victory, and is now 8-1. The Saints would have one more chance to earn the program's 500th victory when they took on Wisconsin-Platteville.
In game two, the Saints sent nine batters to the plate in two separate innings and handed the Pioneers a similar fate to theirs in game one, defeating them 10-1 in five innings.
The Saints batted around in the first inning while scoring four runs, courtesy of two Pioneer errors, two Saints hits. After scoring a single run in the second and third, the Saints were shut out in the fourth, but pulled away with four in the fifth to clinch the victory.
#Shannen Schmidt#
(Fr.-DePere, Wis.) took the mound for the Saints in game two, allowing just one run over five innings of work. The Pioneers reached base courtesy of four hits, three Saints errors, and a pair of walks, but Schmidt continued to work herself out of trouble, making the right pitch at the right time.
Aside from her solid pitching performance, Schmidt also shined at the plate. As one of four Saints with two RBIs on the day, Schmidt was also 3-for-4 at the plate. #Merryssa Tiedeman#
(So.-Zumbrota, Minn.), #Bonnie Kowalczyk#
(Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.), and #Theresa Tauer#
(So.-Plymouth, Minn.) also knocked in two runs on two hits each for the Saints while scoring six of the Saints' ten runs. #Kristin Swartz# (Sr.-Hermantown, Minn.) was also 2-for-4 on the game while scoring two runs of her own.
