TUCSON, Ariz. – The St. Scholastica softball team began its spring trip with a pair of losses to Southwestern University (Texas) and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
The Saints lost to Southwestern 8-0. The Pirates went undefeated in their six games in Tucson. CSS then dropped the second game of the day to UW-La Crosse 8-2.
In the first game against Southwestern, the Saints could only manage one hit in the contest. After scoring two unearned runs in the top of the first, the Pirates maintained that 2-0 lead until the top of the seventh when they exploded for sixth runs and make the final score 8-0.
#Erika Solin# (
Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Central) had the lone hit for the Saints in the third inning. Kara Solomon had 14 strikeouts in the complete-game for the Pirates and #Shannen Schmidt# (
Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) picked up the loss for CSS.
In the second game of the day against UW-La Crosse, it was almost the same story. The Eagles struck first in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs, two of which were unearned due to two CSS errors.
However, the Saints responded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring their first run in Arizona when #Bonnie Kowalczyk# (
Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) singled in #Kristin Swartz# (
Sr.-Hermantown, Minn.) to make it 3-1. CSS added another run in the bottom of the fifth on a #Merryssa Tiedeman# (
So.-Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) RBI-single that plated
Erika Solin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS).
The Eagles then put up a five-spot in the top of the seventh as they went on to win 8-2.

Jr.-Altona, Man.) struck out seven in the loss, while Heather Schultz earned the win for the Eagles and Ashley Veroeven had the save.
The Saints will face the Eagles again for a doubleheader on Tuesday. The first game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. local time.
