DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team won its inaugural game on Friday evening before a capacity crowd at Mars Lakeview Arena, defeating the Augsburg College Auggies by a 3-0 final.

Before the game, the Saints honored two pioneers in collegiate women's hockey as former University of Minnesota Golden Gophers head coach Laura Halldorson and former Augsburg College head coach Jill Pohtilla stood at center ice as St. Scholastica President Larry Goodwin dropped the ceremonial first puck to start St. Scholastica women's hockey.

In taking the inaugural game, the Saints (1-0-0) dropped the Auggies to 0-3-0 on the season.

Junior goaltender #Rachel Borchardt# earned the first shutout in Saints history, making 17 saves including nine in the third period as the Auggies pressured the Saints' lead late.

Freshman #Jana Henry# scored the first goal in program history just four minutes into the game, deflecting a pass by sophomore #Stephanie Lenz# past the Auggie goalie for the score. The 1-0 score held through the first period as the Saints and Auggies each took five shots.

CSS went on the offensive in the second period, taking 15 shots against Auggie goaltender Grace Edgar. She stopped thirteen, but the line of #Cara McMannis#, #Briana Stephens#, and #Briget Cojocar# struck for two goals in the span of four minutes to put the Saints up 3-0.

McMannis netted the first, with assists by Stephens and Cojocar, just before the 12-minute mark in the second period, and Stephens followed that up on their next shift with her first collegiate goal, courtesy of assists from McMannis and Cojocar. The three linemates each earned the first ever multi-point games for the Saints.

Five Saints finished with three shots on the evening as the Saints totaled 27 shots against the Auggies. Freshman #Keri Pickel# had the program's first shot on goal for the Saints. Eric Bertold led the way with four shots for the Auggies.

CSS finished with eight penalties for 16 minutes, while Augsburg committed six penalties for 12 minutes. Neither team made good on the powerplay, finishing 0-4 and 0-6, respectively.

The Saints will have tomorrow off and will get back to game action on Sunday when they host Concordia-Moorhead at Mars Lakeview Arena. The puck is scheduled to drop at 2 p.m. and can be seen live, courtesy of the iFan Sports Network, at csssaints.com.
