MENOMONIE, Wis. – Three first-period goals led the University of Wis.-Stout Blue Devils to a 4-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) victory over the St. Scholastica men's hockey team on Saturday evening.
The Saints fall to 2-4-0 on the season (0-4-0 NCHA) while the Blue Devils improve to 5-3-0 (2-2-0 NCHA).
Stout got on the board first just 1:35 into the first period as Robert Carr netted his first goal of the season. The Saints battled back to tie the game just before the 17-minute mark. #Brett Corcoran# netted the powerplay tally for the Saints with assists by #Kyle Cowan# and #Garet Chumley#.
The Blue Devils came back with two goals in the final three minutes of the first, including one by Casey Kirley just 37 seconds after the Saints tied it up and a powerplay goal by Kevin O'Donnell in the closing seconds of the period.
The teams held quiet for the next period and a half until Stout extended its lead at 8:38 in the third period. The Saints battled back in the third period, out-shooting the Blue Devils eight-to-six, but were unable to overcome the deficit.
Overall, CSS out-shot Stout 26-23 on the evening. #Patrick Sullivan# made 19 saves for the Saints while Tom Lescovich made 25 saves for the Devils.
The Saints finished with six penalties for twelve minutes while the Blue Devils finished with seven for 14. Both teams finished one-for-six on powerplay opportunities.
CSS returns home a week from tonight to take on Northland College in non-conference competition. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:05 p.m.
