WOMEN’S TENNIS WINS TWO TITLES ON FIRST DAY OF UMAC TOURNAMENT

MINNEAPOLIS – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team won two doubles championships on the first day of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament at the Baseline Tennis Center.

The team of #Ploy Suthijindawong# (Fr.-Bangkok, Thailand/Duluth Central) and #Katie Motley# (Jr.-Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) won a conference title at the No. 1 flight. The team defeated Martin Luther 8-1 in the semifinals and then took care of Northwestern College 8-0 in the championship. Motley also won at No. 1 doubles last year.

The team of #Kelly Ross# (Jr.-Buffalo, Minn.) and #Megan Carlson# (Jr.-Pine City, Minn.) won the No. 3 flight championship after not dropping a game in two matches. Ross and Carlson also won last year's conference championship at the No. 3 flight.

Like the men, the Saints women had all six players advance to the championship round in singles action. Ploy Suthijindawong (Bangkok, Thailand/Duluth Central HS) blanked her opponent in the semifinals 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 flight. Katie Motley (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) did the same thing to her opponent at the No. 2 flight. #Callee Conda# (So.-Hibbing, Minn.) won her semifinal match at the No.3 flight by scores of 6-1, 6-0. #Angela Shields# (Jr.-Pengilly, Minn./Greenway) shut out her opponent at the No. 4 flight 6-0, 6-0. #Danni Sonnenfeld# (So.-Harris, Minn./North Branch) won her semifinal match 6-1, 6-0 at the No.5 flight and #Lynnae Wilke# (Sr.-Parkers Prairie, Minn.) won 6-0, 6-1 in her semifinal match at the No. 6 flight. All championship singles matches will take place tomorrow.

Action resumes tomorrow at 8 a.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center.
