MARQUETTE, Mich. – The St. Scholastica softball team went 2-1 on the first day of the Finlandia Tournament being played at the Superior Dome.

The Saints had a slight change in their schedule coming into the tournament as they switched the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh game to host, Finlandia University.

CSS began the day with a 7-1 victory over Hope College (Mich.). #Erika Solin# (Jr.-Duluth, Minn./Central) scored on a Hope error in the bottom of the first to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. CSS then added two runs in the bottom of the second after #Betsy Wehseler# (So.-Ironton, Minn./Crosby-Ironton) scored on a fielder's choice and #Jena Dieryck# (Fr.-Esko, Minn./Duluth Denfeld) scored on another Flying Dutch error.

Betsy Wehseler (Ironton, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS) then led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to extend the lead to 4-0. #Kristin Swartz# (Jr.-Hermantown, Minn.) had a two-run double and #Chelsey Weiss# (Sr.-Brainerd, Minn.) scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-0. Hope College added a run in the top of the seventh, but the Saints went on to win 7-1.

#Kayla Jenkins# (So.-Esko, Minn.) went the distance for the Saints, striking out two and allowing five hits to improve to 1-1 this season. Chelsey Weiss (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS) was 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the CSS offense.

The Saints did not produce much offense in their second game of the day. CSS lost to Simpson College (Iowa) 7-0. St. Scholastica had just three hits in the game, but the game was scoreless into the bottom of the fourth as CSS pitcher #Jenn Falk# (So.-Altona, Man.) was able to keep the Storm from crossing home plate. However, Simpson scored two runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth, and four runs in the sixth as the Storm went on to win 7-0. Falk picked up the loss on the mound and falls to 1-1 overall this season.

CSS made up for its offense drought in the second game with a 10-run first inning against Finlandia University on its way to a 12-2 victory in five innings over the Lions.

#Brynn Wollak# (Fr.-Hugo, Minn./Stillwater) got the scoring started with a RBI-double. #Michaela Carlson# (Jr.-Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson) followed with a run-scoring single. After that, Kirsten Swartz hit a two-run home run to make it 4-0. Erika Solin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) later scored on a fielder's choice and Chelsey Weiss (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS) had a RBI-single. #Robin Lake# (Sr.-Tamarack, Minn./McGregor) then scored on an error and Wollak capped off the inning with a three-run home run to make it 10-0.

After Finlandia scored two runs in the top of the third, the Saints got those two runs right back in the bottom of the inning as #Merryssa Tiedeman# (Fr.-Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) had a two-run single to make the final score 12-2.
