DULUTH, Minn. – The seventh-ranked St. Scholastica hockey team scored three goals in the first seven minutes on its way to a 6-3 victory tonight over 12th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Superior at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The Saints improve to 7-2-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The Yellowjackets fall to 7-4-1 overall and to 2-4-1 in the league. The victory marks win no. 72 for CSS head coach Mark Wick at St. Scholastica, which ties Del Genereau for the most wins by a coach in CSS hockey history.

It took just 1:36 seconds for the Saints to get on the board as #Aaron Spotts# (Sr.-Spokane, Wash.) fired a slap shot into the net for his second of the season. #Jeremy Dawes# (So.-Winnipeg, Man.) and #Tyler Miller# (Fr.-Fort Frances, Ont.) had the assists. Then 12 seconds later, CSS made it 2-0 on a #Riley Riddell# (Jr.-Wawota, Sask.) goal, his fifth on the campaign. #Brett Corcoran# (Fr.-Parksville, B.C.) and #Jordan Chong# (Sr.-North Vancouver, B.C.) had the assists.

With less than 14 minutes to go in the opening period, #Carter Davis# (So.-Moose Jaw, Sask.) made it 3-0 with his second tally on the year. #Jordan Baird# (Sr.-Port McNeill, B.C.) and #Jeff Gagnon# (Sr.-Quesnel, B.C.) had the assists. The Saints added one more in the period as Jordan Chong (North Vancouver, British Columbia/Dryden (SIJHL)) scored his third short-handed goal in as many games with 35 seconds left to give CSS 4-0 lead at the first intermission.

The Saints had a 17-3 shot advantage in the first 20 minutes and the Yellowjackets pulled starting goaltender Garrett Tinkham after he gave up the third goal.

The second period was relatively quiet as there was not one penalty called between these two rivals and not many stoppages. Superior did manage to get on the scoreboard as a funny bounce off the side board caught CSS goaltender #Zach Kleiman# (Sr.-Ottawa, Ont.) off guard and the puck trickled into the net to make it 4-1 CSS at the second intermission.

The Yellowjackets would get called for a five-minute major penalty early in the third period and St. Scholastica capitalized as Jeremy Dawes (Winnipeg, Manitoba/College Jeanne Suave (Portage-MJHL) ) scored the power-play goal to make it 5-1. Carter Davis (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Central Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) had the assist. The Saints netted their final goal of the night when Jordan Baird (Port McNeill, British Columbia/Victoria (BCHL)) scored halfway through the period to make it 6-1. Davis and #Austin Brown# (So.-Lathrup Village, Mich.) had the assists.

The Yellowjackets tried to make it interesting late as they scored two quick goals to make it 6-3. Later in the period, they would have a goal waved off as it was ruled the net was off before the puck crossed the line. That call put an end to Superior as the Saints took the first game of the series 6-3.

CSS out-shot the Yellowjackets 40-21. Zach Kleiman (Ottawa, Ontario/Quinnipiac Univ.) had 18 saves to improve to 4-0-2 on the year for the Saints. Garrett Tinkham had the loss for the Yellowjackets, but Bryan Dalbec had 28 saves in relief. A total of seven penalties were called in the contest.

The Saints and Yellowjackets will do battle again tomorrow night at Mars Lakeview Arena. Same start time of 7:05 p.m. You can listen to the game live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC or watch it on the web, courtesy of the iFan Sports Network, at csssaints.com. The game will also be televised live on My 9.
