Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's hockey team hosted the Oles of Saint Olaf College in the second of a two-game MIAC Conference series. Last night, the Saints took home a 1-0 win over the Oles, led by Greta Culshaw-Kelin, who recorded another goal, and a shoot out goal tonight. Tonight went long, past regulation, past overtime, into a shootout. The Saints went on to score the game-winning-goal in the shootout.
How it Happened
First Period
The Saints came out flying and controlled the pace early, putting steady pressure on the Oles' defense. Their strong start paid off midway through the period when Greta Culshaw-Klein (Maplewood, MN/Tartan HS) opened the scoring at even strength. Hanley Block (Alexandria, MN/Alexandria HS) and Paige Blattner (Avon, MN/River Lakes HS) helped set it up, and Culshaw-Klein buried the chance to give CSS a 1–0 lead.
St. Scholastica continued to dictate play for much of the period, outshooting St. Olaf and forcing their goaltender to stay busy. Defensively, the Saints were sharp in front of Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, MN/Grand Rapids HS), who turned aside every shot she faced in the opening frame.
Second Period
The momentum carried into the middle period, and the Saints struck again. Alaina Hedberg (St. Paul, MN/Tartan HS) capitalized on a strong shift and finished an unassisted play to extend the lead to 2–0. The goal rewarded CSS's persistent forecheck and puck pressure, which kept St. Olaf pinned in their own zone for stretches.
Cole remained steady in net as the Oles tried to push back, and the Saints' defensive structure kept most shots to the outside while continuing to generate chances of their own.
Third Period
St. Olaf mounted a push in the third, scoring once at even strength and later adding a power-play goal to tie the game 2–2. The Oles eventually grabbed a 3–2 lead late in regulation, but the Saints never backed down.
With time winding down, St. Scholastica pulled Cole for the extra attacker and turned up the pressure. The move paid off in a huge moment — Hanley Block (Alexandria, MN/Alexandria HS) buried the game-tying goal with just 16 seconds left in regulation. Culshaw-Klein picked up an assist on the play, capping a clutch shift from the Saints' top unit and sending the game to overtime with the crowd on its feet.
