NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The St. Scholastica men's hockey team earned a 3-2 win over St. Olaf on Saturday evening in game two of the weekend series. Two short-handed goals and a strong defensive performance propelled the Saints to their first MIAC victory since November.
The opening period was a defensive battle with neither team finding the back of the net.
St. Scholastica opened the scoring in the second period while playing shorthanded. Evan Pahos (Parker, CO/) scored at 4:27, assisted by Riley Girod (Calvet, SK, Canada/). The Saints continued to control the period and added another goal late in the frame when Jared Scott (Kenosha, WI/Christian Life School) scored with an assist from Daniel Kroon (Calgary, Canada/). St. Scholastica outshot the Oles 13-4 in the period and entered the third with a 2-0 lead.
The Oles got on the board at 4:05 of the third period, but the Saints responded quickly. Girod scored unassisted on another short-handed goal. St. Olaf cut the deficit to one goal with just under 10 minutes left in the period, but the Saints' defense held strong to secure the 3-2 victory.
Brenden Stroble (Livonia, MI/Adlai E. Stevenson HS) made 36 saves in net for the Saints, while Pahos led the offense with five shots on goal.
The Saints (5-17-1, 2-11-1 MIAC) will wrap up conference play next weekend against No. 20 Gustavus. Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday, February 13 in St. Peter, with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
