Volleyball Falls to Bethel in Three Sets

DULUTH, Minn. – Abby Zins (Chisago Lakes, MN/Chisago Lakes High School) recorded 10 kills to lead the St. Scholastica volleyball team Saturday evening as the Saints fell to Bethel University in three sets at Reif Gymnasium.

The Royals took the match by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-17, moving St. Scholastica to 4-10 overall and 0-3 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Bethel improved to 15-4 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC.

The opening set featured seven ties and three lead changes before Bethel pulled away. The Saints improved their offensive efficiency in the second set, recording 10 kills with just three attack errors, but the Royals countered with 18 kills and a .432 hitting percentage to take a two-set lead. St. Scholastica produced its highest kill total of the match with 13 in the third set, but Bethel closed out the sweep.

Lilli Rechichi (Ely, MN/Ely Memorial HS) added seven kills and hit .263, while Tayte Borstad (Duluth, MN/Duluth East HS) contributed six kills on a .286 hitting percentage and registered two solo blocks. Ava Decker (Rochester, MN/Century HS) finished with four kills, and Carmen McDonough (Elk River, MN/Spectrum) added three kills and a solo block.

Bailey Husbands (Baudette, MN/Lake of the Woods HS) handed out 25 assists and tied Cassidy Lustig (Ashland, WI/Ashland HS) and Decker for the team lead with six digs apiece. Husbands, Lustig, Decker and Lauren Kahl (Ridgeland, WI/Prairie Farm HS) each recorded a service ace.

The Saints finished with 31 kills and a .134 hitting percentage. Bethel hit .383 with 44 kills, led by Peyton Howie's 13.

St. Scholastica returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 6, traveling across the bridge to face UW-Superior.
