DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team celebrated Bryn Ziegler (Hutchinson, MN/Hutchinson HS) and Abby Zins (Chisago Lakes, MN/Chisago Lakes High School) on Senior Night Friday at Reif Gymnasium before dropping a three-set match to Gustavus Adolphus, 25-18, 25-17, 25-21.
The Saints recognized Ziegler and Zins for their contributions to the program as both prepare to graduate. Ziegler will complete her degree in December, while Zins, a junior, will graduate a year early this spring.
Tayte Borstad (Duluth, MN/Duluth East HS) led St. Scholastica with eight kills, while Lilli Rechichi (Ely, MN/Ely Memorial HS) added five without an attack error, hitting .417 on 12 attempts. Bailey Husbands (Baudette, MN/Lake of the Woods HS) finished with 22 assists and a team-high eight digs.
Gustavus hit .357 in the opening set, recording 14 kills to take a 25-18 win. The Gusties continued their efficient offense in the second, hitting .385 while limiting the Saints to seven kills in a 25-17 decision.
St. Scholastica put together its strongest offensive set in the third, finishing with 11 kills and a .212 hitting percentage. The teams traded the lead five times and were tied nine times before Gustavus secured the sweep with a 25-21 victory.
The Saints found success at the service line throughout the match, totaling nine aces against just two service errors. Ava Decker (Rochester, MN/Century HS) led the way with four aces, while Cassidy Lustig (Ashland, WI/Ashland HS) added three to go with seven digs. Ziegler contributed five digs, two assists and an ace, and Zins finished with four kills.
Logan Brent paced Gustavus with 14 kills, while Meaghan Kreiser added nine on a .500 hitting percentage. Sahara Morken distributed 31 assists as the Gusties hit .337 for the match.
St. Scholastica moved to 7-16 overall and 2-8 in MIAC play, while Gustavus improved to 14-10 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
