SUPERIOR, Wis. – Tayte Borstad (Duluth, MN/Duluth East HS) recorded 13 kills and Abby Zins (Chisago Lakes, MN/Chisago Lakes High School) added 11 as the St. Scholastica volleyball team fell to UW-Superior in four sets Tuesday evening at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
The Saints dropped the nonconference match 22-25, 14-25, 25-19, 13-25, moving to 4-11 overall. UW-Superior improved to 12-3.
St. Scholastica tallied 14 kills in a closely contested opening set, but the Yellowjackets secured a 25-22 win before taking the second set 25-14.
The Saints responded with their strongest offensive performance in the third, recording 15 kills against just three errors for a .293 hitting percentage. CSS limited UW-Superior to a .146 mark in the set and earned a 25-19 victory to extend the match. The Yellowjackets answered by hitting .429 in the fourth set to close out the win.
Borstad hit .303 and contributed three block assists, while Lilli Rechichi (Ely, MN/Ely Memorial HS) finished with eight kills. Bailey Husbands (Baudette, MN/Lake of the Woods HS) directed the offense with 35 assists and added seven digs and an ace.
Cassidy Lustig (Ashland, WI/Ashland HS) led the Saints defensively with 19 digs, followed by Ava Decker (Rochester, MN/Century HS) with 16. Decker and Lauren Kahl (Ridgeland, WI/Prairie Farm HS) each served two aces.
UW-Superior finished with a .254 hitting percentage to St. Scholastica's .084 and held a 12-3 advantage in total blocks. Makenna Hohbein paced the Yellowjackets with 17 kills and 16 digs.
The Saints return to MIAC play Friday, Oct. 9, traveling to Saint Benedict for a 7 p.m. match in St. Joseph.
