DUBUQUE, Iowa - The St. Scholastica women's soccer team put forth a determined effort on Sunday afternoon but came up short in a 2-1 loss to the University of Dubuque at Oyen Field.
After a scoreless first half, the game quickly turned into a back-and-forth battle. Dubuque struck first in the 48th minute, but the Saints responded just five minutes later. Senior
Peyton Mathiasen (St. Cloud, MN/St. Cloud Cathedral HS) buried her first goal of the season in the 54th minute, finishing a feed from
Julia Lewis (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove HS) to even the score 1-1.
The Saints defense and goalkeeper
Rylee Senich (Cloquet, MN/Cloquet HS) were tested throughout the match, as Dubuque fired 28 total shots, 16 of which were on target. Senich was outstanding, collecting 14 saves and keeping the Saints in the match with several highlight stops.
Despite the strong defensive effort, Dubuque regained the lead in the 80th minute, and the Saints couldn't find the equalizer late.
St. Scholastica finished with four shots, three on goal, including two from
Anna Manion (Superior, WI/Superior HS), while Mathiasen and Lewis provided the offensive spark.
The Saints (0-3-1) will look to bounce back on Wednesday, September 13th at home against Bethany Lutheran. That game is slated to start at 2pm.
