Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica football team hosted the Macalester Scots today, Saturday, September 27th in a MIAC Conference match up that would be forced into double overtime. With determination and skill, the Saints were able to come out on top after Kicker Jacob Andrews (Owatonna, MN/Medford HS) nailed a field goal to send the Scots home, with a final score of 37-34.
How it Happened
First Half
The opening quarter belonged to Macalester, but the Saints' defense kept the game within reach. After the Scots struck first with a short touchdown pass, the Saints responded with poise. Andrews got the Saints on the board in the second quarter, drilling a 39-yard field goal to cut into the deficit. Later in the quarter, Andrews' steady leg tied things up at 6–6 with a 42-yarder. Right before halftime, however, Macalester managed a touchdown pass to take a 13–6 lead into the locker room.
Third Quarter
The Saints regrouped and delivered big plays after the break. Though Macalester extended its lead with a short rushing touchdown, senior quarterback Donald West (St. Paul, MN/Woodbury HS) answered by engineering a 75-yard drive. He capped it off with a pinpoint 5-yard touchdown strike to Teagen Lubinski (Crookston, MN/Crookston HS), bringing the Saints within 20–13.
Fourth Quarter
The Saints' offense exploded in the final quarter. West found Maurice Rosebear (Red Wing, MN/Red Wing HS) for a 27-yard touchdown, tying the game at 20. Moments later, Jevon Williams (Willmar, MN/Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (ACGC)) punched in an 8-yard rushing score, giving the Saints their first lead at 27–20.
Though Macalester answered back with two quick touchdowns to surge ahead, the Saints refused to quit. With just over a minute left, West provided a heroic moment—breaking free for a breathtaking 64-yard touchdown run that evened the game at 34–34 and ignited the home crowd.
Overtime
The game came down to clutch kicking. After both teams battled through regulation and a missed chance, Jacob Andrews (Owatonna, MN/Medford HS) once again stepped up under pressure. His calm, accurate 35-yard field goal in the extra session sealed the Saints' thrilling 37–34 victory.
