MOORHEAD, Minn. — The College of St. Scholastica football team fell to Concordia (Minn.) College by a final score of 49–21 at Jake Christiansen Stadium in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
Concordia (Minn.) struck fast and often, scoring touchdowns on each of its first four drives to open up a commanding 28–0 lead late in the second quarter. Quarterback Jersey Selzler connected with Davion Henderson twice in the first quarter—first on a 9-yard pass and then on a 62-yard bomb—to help build the early cushion.
The Cobbers didn't let up in the second. A 1-yard touchdown run by Nick Walter early in the quarter extended the lead to 21–0, and Walter later found Grant Mages on a 5-yard touchdown pass to cap a 12-play, 73-yard drive that seemed to put the game out of reach at 28–0.
But St. Scholastica (CSS) responded with a quick strike before halftime. On the Saints' very next play from scrimmage, quarterback Donald West (St. Paul, MN/Woodbury HS) connected with Curtis Favors (St. Paul, MN/Tartan HS) for a 75-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline, giving CSS a spark heading into the break and cutting the deficit to 28–7.
Any momentum the Saints hoped to carry into the second half was quickly erased as Concordia opened the third quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run from Walter—his second rushing score of the game. CSS fought back with an 8-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown pass from West to Nathan Behrens (Watertown, MN/Watertown-Mayer HS), narrowing the gap to 35–14.
However, the Cobbers offense remained relentless. Mason Hughes ran in a 13-yard score late in the third quarter to make it 42–14. The Saints answered with a long, methodical 14-play drive that ended with Jevon Williams (Willmar, MN/Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (ACGC)) punching it in from five yards out, but Concordia sealed the game with a final touchdown midway through the fourth: a 5-yard pass from Selzler to Griffin Babolian, making the score 49–21.
West threw two touchdown passes and rushed for 247 yards of total offense for the Saints, while Favors finished with over 100 receiving yards, highlighted by his explosive 75-yard touchdown.
With the loss, St. Scholastica drops to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in league play. The Saints return home to Duluth on Saturday, Oct. 11 for Homecoming Weekend to face Carleton College, looking to bounce back and regroup as MIAC play continues. The game is set to begin at 1:00 pm. inside of Walt Hunting Stadium.
