Saints Announce Presence in Bulldog Open Against Twin Port Rivals

4/27/2025 9:45:00 PM

While the student body enjoyed Mayfest on campus, the track and field team headed across the street to compete at the Bulldog Open at UMD. On a sunny Saturday in Duluth, the community came together to celebrate as the local trio of UMD, UWS, and St. Scholastica faced off against each other.

Lars DeWall stormed the track with a commanding victory in the 1500m run. With a few reckless challenges to navigate over the opening lap, DeWall took charge of the lead and never looked back. Crossing the line in 3:57.91, DeWall claimed the win by nearly 15 seconds.

Sean Alfaro Diedrich (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) continued his electric final season with a preliminary qualifier in the 100m dash of 11.02 seconds. He returned in the final to execute a clean race and lock up a fourth place finish. Although he ran a personal best time of 10.97 seconds, the wind reading was just a smidgen above the legal reading of 4.0m/s.

Noah Kubicek (Owatona, Minn./Owatonna HS) raced to a runner up finish in the 400m with a time of 49.75 seconds.

Alfaro Diedrich and Kubicek split the difference and met in the middle to challenge each other in the half lap race. Kubicek exploded off the turn and found his top gear as he sped to the line in first place. His time of 22.03 seconds is a new personal record, and improves his standing as the second fastest Saint in this event. Alfaro Diedrich crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 22.45 seconds.

Calvin Boone (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Highland Park HS) ran 1:56.92 to place third in the 800m run. Derek Douglas (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba HS) was on his heels in fifth place with a finishing time of 1:58.00.

Capping the running events off in style, Alfaro Diedrich, Kubicek, Zachary Bartsh, and Douglas came together to win big in the 4x400m relay. They took the victory in a time of 3:26.26.

Matthew Erickson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) claimed the triple jump title with a final leap of 12.92m.

Anthony Mahowald (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) got back onto the runway with a third place finish. His best attempt sent him 6.31m.

Joshua Monreal (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) led the throwers with a trio of top three finishes. Monreal placed third in the hammer throw with a best throw of 50.26m. He found another third place finish in the discus with his best release going 41.63m. Monreal's final and best finish of the day came in the shot put where he grabbed runner up honors with a throw of 14.68m.

Not much stands between the Saints and the MIAC Championships on May 9th and 10th at Macalester College. As the team continues to prepare for their peak, a squad will head down to Hamline University to solidify final qualifying marks.
