Schelonka Hits for the Cycle, Caps Off Eventful Victory of UW-Superior

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica baseball team took care of the Yellowjackets from UW-Superior this afternoon at Wade Stadium in an outstanding performance from both teams. The Saints jumped out to a 13-6 lead after three innings of play, and after the Yellowjackets chipped away at its deficit, a walk off two-run home run pushed CSS across the finish line, taking today's contest by a score of 16-15.

How it Happened

The Yellowjackets were the ones to break the scoreless tie in the top of the second inning, as three runs would come across on five hits, taking a 3-0 lead over CSS.

Sam Shopbell (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake HS (Fayetteville CC)) and Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central CC)) both singled to lead off the bottom of the second for CSS, as not long after the Saints would score its runs on a wild pitch and a passed ball, respectively. Adam Braun (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS (Central Lakes CC)) then drove in Brady Goebel (Albany, MN/Albany HS) to tie things at 3-3 and after Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) singled for the second time, Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) tripled in both runners, giving the Saints its first lead of the afternoon.

CSS was not done in the inning, however, as Finley Spicer (Aberdeen, N.C./Union Pines HS (Limestone University)) added another run on an RBI single, followed by an RBI double by Shopbell, as the Saints held a 7-3 lead after one inning.

UW-Superior wasted no time to respond in the top of the second inning, as once again three runs would score in the inning, cutting its deficit to 7-6.

The Saints were able to load the bases with one out in the inning to begin the bottom of the second inning when Schelonka drove in two runs on a base hit. One batter later, Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) drove in the third run for CSS in the inning, which was followed up with a three-run home run by Spicer, putting the Saints ahead 13-6.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Yellowjackets were able to score six runs in the inning, highlighted by a grand slam, as the score now sat at 13-12 in favor of CSS.

UWS was able to complete the comeback, tying things at 13-13 on a solo home run as the game headed down the late stages.

CSS got two runners on in the bottom of the eighth inning on hit by pitches, as Goebel was able to drive in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly, taking a 14-13 lead with UWS down to its final three outs.

After two runners got on base for the Yellowjackets with two outs, a two-RBI triple put UWS in front 15-14, as the Saints had its turn to be down to its final three outs.

Oswald walked to begin the bottom of the ninth for CSS, as just one batter later, Schelonka completed the cycle in style, hitting a home run to left to walk it off for CSS, coming away with a 16-15 victory over the Yellowjackets this afternoon.
