SAINT PAUL, Minn. – .The St. Scholastica baseball team traveled to St. Paul last night to take on the Pipers from Hamline at CHS Field in a conference doubleheader matchup. The Saints were able to take an early lead in game one, en route to a 5-1 victory, and showcased its dominant offensive performance in game two, coming away with an 11-0 victory after eight innings.
Game One: CSS: 5, HAM: 1
After the Saints went down quietly in the top of the first inning, Damian Tamayo Vera (Miami, FL./Felix Varela Senior HS) and Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central CC)) both walked to put two runners on. In stepped Levi Stubbles (San Bruno, Calif./El Camino HS (Skyline College)), who delivered the first run of the game with an RBI double to give CSS a 1-0 lead.
Zack Hlinsky (Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) struck out the side in the bottom of the second inning, as CSS still held on to a 1-0 lead.
Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) knocked a base hit, followed by a Piper error to put Finley Spicer (Aberdeen, N.C./Union Pines HS (Limestone University)) on. After Tamayo Vera ripped an RBI single to score Tiemann, Sam Shopbell (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake HS (Fayetteville CC)) was able to drive in another run on a sacrifice fly, expanding the lead to 3-0.
Hlinsky continued to dominate on the mound, as the Pipers were unable to chip into CSS' lead through the middle innings, with CSS still leading 3-0 after five innings of play.
The Saints added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, one on a Piper error, the other coming on an RBI single by Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) to score Stubbles, making the score 5-0.
Hamline was able to score its first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly, but Hlinsky was able to finish the job in the seventh inning, and give CSS a game one victory by a score of 5-1.
Game Two: CSS: 11, HAM: 0
The Saints jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second inning, as Shopbell drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, giving CSS a 1-0 lead.
Back-to-back doubles to begin the top of the fourth inning by Tiemann and Spicer made the score 2-0, followed by later in the inning an RBI single by Garlick brought across another run, expanding the Saints lead to 3-0.
After Stubbles doubled to lead off the top of the fifth inning, Adam Braun (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS (Central Lakes CC)) launched a two-run home run, bringing the score to 5-0.
Matt Forrest (Oakdale, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) continued his fast start in the second game in the middle innings of the contest, holding the Pipers scoreless.
The Saints were able to load the bases to begin the top of the eighth inning. A pair of singles from Shopbell and Stubbles brought in three runs, pushing the lead to 8-0. Later in the inning, Oswald and Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) both drove in runs on RBI singles, as did Brady Goebel (Albany, MN/Albany HS), as the Saints lead grew to 11-0.
Forrest was able to complete his masterpiece on the mound in the bottom of the eighth inning, retiring all three batters he faced, as Forrest finished his performance with a complete game and only one hit allowed while walking zero and striking out five.

The Saints (19-15, 7-8 MIAC) will be back in action on Tuesday, April 29, where they will travel to take on the Scots from Macalester College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
