The majority of the track and field team made their way to St. Thomas University on Saturday to compete before the long weekend. Incoming storms threatened the meet's original schedule, as the Saints boarded an early bus to beat the weather. Although the meet was smaller than a typical invitational, a strong presence of Division I talent kept the competition fierce.
In the 100m dash, Sean Alfaro Diedrich (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) passed one of the most elusive milestones in the entirety of the sport. Placing sixth overall, Alfaro Diedrich broke the eleven second barrier by the thinnest of margins with a time of 10.99 seconds. This improves his mark as the fourth fastest Saint of all-time in the event.
Alfaro Diedrich also shot up the Saints record board in the 200m later in the day. Running a personal best by nearly three tenths of a seconds, Alfaro Diedrich finished in 22.37 seconds to move into third on the Saints all-time list.
Noah Kubicek (Owatona, Minn./Owatonna HS) also ran a personal best time in the 200m race to better his standing as the second fastest Saint of all-time in the half-lap race. Kubicek's time of 22.22 seconds was good for fifth overall in the stacked event.
Kubicek also raced to a runner-up finish in the 400m dash. His time of 49.28 seconds is the fastest clocking of the season.
Derek Douglas (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba HS) surged to a season's best in the 800m dash. Douglas placed eighth overall in a time of 1:58.93.
The action doesn't stop here for Saints Track and Field this weekend. The throwers will travel to Mankato to continue their season, as well as a handful of distance runners chasing national qualifying marks in La Crosse. Both of those competitions will take place on Friday, April 18th.
