Orlando, Fl. – The Saint Scholastica men's tennis team took part in its fourth match of their spring break trip to Florida. Competing against the Bears of Ursinus College, they came up just short of the victory, ending with a final score of 4-3.
How it Happened
Doubles
Jonas Abeleda (Sydney, Australia/St Aloysius' College) and Eamon Gerrar-Stace competed in the No. 1 doubles match. After a tough battle against the Bears, forcing a tie-breaker, the Saints did not score the final winning point, resulting in the Saints' dropping the first point 6-7.
Dane Patten (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Jack Onkka (Thief River Falls, Minn./), along with Reece Patten (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Alex Daigneault (Agua Dulce, Calif./Hart HS), slotted in at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots respectively. Both pairings were unable to overcome the Bears' athletes, taking two more losses, with D. Patten and Onkka scoring 2-6 and R. Patten and Daigneault taking a shut-out loss 0-6.
Singles
Abeleda and Gerrard-Stace both competed in singles at the No.1 and No. 3 spots. These two match ups resulted in the Saints' only wins of the day. In the No. 1 singles spot, Abeleda captured a victory after three sets, scoring 6-3, 2-6, and 1-0. Gerrard-Stace managed to end his match in two sets, scoring 6-3 in both.
D. Patten, who already competed in the No. 2 doubles match today, also competed in the No. 2 singles match. Grasping at another singles victory, he managed to extend his match to three sets, but was bested by the Bears in the third, scoring 2-6, 6-2, and 0-1.
Onkka also made his second appearance of the day, now competing at the No. 5 singles match. Onkka also made a strong push, but his match also went to three sets. He managed to beat his opponent 6-1 in the first set but failed to convert in the final two, scoring 3-6 and 0-1 in the second and third sets.
Harper Dircks (Hopkins, Minn.) and Andy Schaffer both made their first appearances of the day in the No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches. Both Dircks and Schaffer made it difficult for their opponents to succeed. Dircks forced a tie-breaker in his first set, ultimately coming up just short with a score of 6-7. Dircks went on to score 6-2 and ended his third set with a final score of 0-1. Shaffer forced his first two sets to have an extra game, ending with scores of 5-7 and 7-5.
