Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica men's tennis team competed in the second match of their spring break trip in Florida, facing off against the Firebirds of Carthage College. Today's match ended in a 7-0 loss for the Saints.
How it Happened
Doubles
Jonas Abeleda (Sydney, Australia/St Aloysius' College) and Eamon Gerrard-Stace (Brisbane, Au./St Joseph's Nudgee College) opened things up for the Saints in the doubles portion of the match. They were unable to capture a victory, finishing with a score of 2-6.
Jack Onkka (Thief River Falls, Minn./) and Dane Patten (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) competed second for the Saints. They too were bested by their opponents, ending with a score of 1-6.
Reece Patten (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Alex Daigneault (Agua Dulce, Calif./Hart HS) were the final athletes for the Saints' doubles matches. They fought until the last point, forcing a tie-breaker, but they too were unsuccessful in achieving the win, finishing with a score of 5-7.
Singles
Abeleda also started the Saints off in the singles section of this match. In his singles match, he fought well but was ultimately bested by the Firebirds, ending with scores of 0-6 and 2-6.
Harper Dircks (Hopkins, Minn.) was the second competitor for the Saints. While he fought hard, it was not enough to achieve the win, ending with scores of 4-6 and 2-6.
Andy Shaffer (Buffalo, Minn./) appeared for the first time today for the Saints. He scored 3-6 and 0-6 in his match, unable to achieve victory.
Jose Naranjo () competed valiantly for the Saints in his singles match, forcing a tie-breaker in his second set, but he ultimately fell 4-6 and 6-7.
Drew Anderson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) was the second to last athlete for the Saints to compete. In his match, he finished with set scores 0-6 and 1-6 against the Firebirds.
Timon Herrmann () rounded out today's effort for the Saints. In a final push to achieve a singles win for the Saints, he too came up just short, scoring 2-6 and 4-6.
What's Next
The Saints will continue their Spring break trip in Orlando, Fl. with their third opponent set to be the Bears (2-2) of Ursinus College on Tuesday, March 11. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
