Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's basketball team hosted the Royals of Bethel University in tonight's doubleheader. The first game, featuring the Women's basketball team, ended with a final score of 34- 74, with the Royals striding to victory.
How it Happened
First Quarter
Both teams got on the board, starting with the Royals, who scored an early layup, a layup from the Saints quickly followed that. Bethel was quick to respond, netting a layup, that was quickly followed by a three-pointer.
The Saints turned the ball over giving the Bethel Royals another three points. Their layup was then followed by another Bethel layup. The Saints were quick to respond, scoring two more points, only to be doubled by the Royls' next two layups.
Both teams exchanged blows, until the Bethel lead reached 15 points, ending the quarter with a comfortable lead.
Second Quarter
Bethel started the scoring in the second quarter, making two free throws and two layups, which was followed by a layup from Daysia Simmons (Albertville, MN/St. Michael HS).
Bethel scored three more points, followed by a layup from the Saints, keeping the Bethel lead at 23 points.
Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) was on the free throw line, awarded two shots after being fouled on a layup, she managed to score one of two free throws, only cutting the lead by one point.
Bethel went on to end the second quarter with a layup and three-point shot, coasting to halftime with a 29-point lead.
Third Quarter
The Saints were the first on the boards to open the third, scoring a two-point jump shot coming off a mist three-point from the Royals.
Nearly three minutes elapsed in the quarter before the next points were scored. Ava Haus (St. Michael/St. Michael-Albertville High School) was on the free throw line this time, she too only managed to sink one of two free throws, bringing the lead, momentarily, to 26. Bethel responded with two layups, and two made free throws of their own.
Lind was on the line again, on this trip, she sank both of her awarded free throws, cutting the large deficit to 30. Once again, Bethel was quick to strike back, coming back with two layups and one free throw.
Madison Kenyon (Woodstock, IL/Marian Central Catholic HS) scored a tip-in layup for the Saints, demonstrating good positioning and skill in the paint, and with not much time left Bethel ended the third quarter with another layup.
Fourth Quarter
Bethel once again started the scoring in the quarter, with two layups, and two free throws. The Saints, now just trying to score points, replied with one layup, and two free throws. The free throws were courtesy of Jada Biersbach.
Bethel went on to score two more layups, a three-pointer, and a free throw before the Saints scored another point. The Saints, now down 41, got another layup, and two free throws to fall, those points were broken up by a Bethel layup.
Both teams traded free throws to end the game, rounding things out with a final score of 34-74.
What's Next
The Saints (11-12, 8-8 MIAC) will take to the road on Saturday, February 22, headed to Minneapolis, Minn. to play the Auggies (3-20, 1-15 MIAC) of Augsburg University in the final game of the regular season, tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
