How it Happened
First Period
The first 20 minutes of action started off with the Sabers winning the opening face off, but quickly relinquishing possession of the puck to the Saints who took it over the blue lines and attempting two shots on net.
Following the Saints opening attempts, both traded shots, all being stopped. That was until the Saints once again has possession, moved the puck around from Bailey Coole (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), to Victoria Nelson (Mahtomedi, MN/Mahtomedi HS), finally to Lyndi Schubert (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) who recorded the first goal of the game, putting the Saints up 1-0 early in the contest.
Following Schubert's goal, the Saints managed to dominate the Sabers on both offense and defense, forcing Marians goalie to work hard to avoid another goal, recording five saves as the Saints offense was firing.
Marian would go on an offensive streak of their own, getting five shots on net, but Saints goaltender Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) was able to stop all five.
The first period came to a close quickly after, with the Saints up 1-0.
Second Period
Marian started strong in the second period, forcing Cole to defend early on, recording a quick four saves.
The Saints took the puck back, attempting to get shots on net, but quickly found themselves shorthanded after taking a penalty.
Losing one skater was not enough to phase the Saints offense, because during this penalty kill, Saints defender Hannah Martin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) skillfully beat the Marian power play scoring her first of two goals to put the Saints up 2-0. Martin was assisted by Paige Blattner (Avon, Minn./River Lakes HS) and Grace Chapman (Blaine, MN/Blaine HS).
Following Martins goal, the Saints successfully killed off the Marian power play, keeping the game at 2-0.
The Sabers, who remained scoreless up until this point in the game released a barrage of shots against the Saints, Cole was able to stop four of the shots but the fifth managed to slip in putting Marian on the board for their first time in tonight's match up.
The Saints got the puck, and similar to Marian, released an offensive barrage against the Sabers goaltender, she was able to stop most of the shots, but not all as Gabby Gamst (Moose Lake, Minn./Moose Lake HS), who got the puck from Morgan Mitchell (Farmington, MN/Farmington HS), and Alaina Hedberg (St. Paul, MN/Tartan HS) found the back of the net, recording the Saints third goal of the night.
Very quickly after Gamst's goal, Martin was once again on the ice, and was once again able to blow by the defense and ring in the Saints fourth, and her second goal of the night. Martins second goal was assisted by Victoria Nelson (Mahtomedi, MN/Mahtomedi HS), and Gamst.
Firing on all cylinders, the Saints did not want to back off, and less than a minute after Martins second goal, Chapman recorded a goal of her own. The Saints fifth goal was assisted by Jolynn Hauan (Hutchinson, MN/Hutchinson HS) and Hanley Block (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS).
The Saints built a very comfortable lead going into the second intermission, ahead against Marian 5-1.
Third Period
Standing on a four goal lead going into the third period, the Saints made a change to their line up, putting Anita Origlio (Gap, France/Rice Memorial HS) in net for the final 20.
The third period opened up with the Saints winning face offs and recording four shots on goal. The Saints were successful in keeping the puck in the Sabers end in the beginning, however the Sabers got the puck back and tried to get shots on net and goals on the board, however Marion was only able to get two of six shots on net.
Following the early efforts in the game, both teams traded offensive bouts, often recording multiple shots on net, allowing the goalkeepers to get action on both sides of the ice.
