Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's hockey team stayed in Moorhead, Minn. today to play the second of a two-game series against the Cobbers of Concordia College. Today's game ended with the Saints prevailing over their MIAC Conference opponent, the Cobbers, with a 2-0 shutout victory.
How it Happened
First Period
Period one opened up with the Saints on offense forcing the Cobbers defense to reel back. Their offensive stint did not last very long as the Cobbers prevailed on a face off allowing both teams to then exchange offensive attacks.
As time began to wind down in the period, both teams tried to gain an edge on their opponent with both teams getting a good number of shots on net off in the remainder of the period, in the final minutes the Saints attempted five shots, and the Cobbers six, however the score remained 0-0 going into the second.
Second Period
Period two opened up strong on offense for both teams. In the opening minutes of the period, the teams were only separated by three shots, with the Cobbers having the edge there.
Nearing the halfway mark in the second, both teams were still stuck in a stalemate with a score of 0-0 and quick changes in possession, that was until Hanley Block (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) had the puck nine minutes into the period and gave the Saints the lead nearly halfway through the game.
The Cobbers, now down one goal, attempted to use the last 11 minutes of play to tie the game. The Cobbers were able to out shoot the Saints in the remaining minutes of play in the period only allowing the Saints four shots on net, but getting seven shots off. Goaltender Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) was there in the pipes and was able to stop any advance the Cobbers tried to make.
The period came to a close with the Saints sitting on their one-goal lead going into the second intermission.
Third Period
The final twenty minutes of the game started with the Cobbers on a power play, and while the Cobbers were able to get four shots on net, Cole stopped those, and the Saints defense was able to successfully kill the Cobbers power play.
Less than a half-minute after the Cobbers power play ended, they were on the power play again. This time, the Saints put a quick end to the Cobbers power play efforts, only allowing two shots on net before the two minutes was up.
Following the second power play, the Cobbers dominated on offense, attempting seven shots on goal, fortunately for the Saints, they were all stopped. On the other side of the ice, the Saints were only able to get three shots on goal that were also all stopped.
With a little over two minutes remaining in the game, the Saints were booked for a third penalty in the period. Given this opportunity, the Cobbers quickly took a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Cobbers pulled their goalie, giving them a sixth skater against the Saints who only had four.
Concordia was only able to get two shots on net before the Saints' Lyndi Schubert (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) was able to net the Saints second goal of the night, an empty netter with only thirty six seconds left in the game.
The game quickly came to an end following Schubert's goal, giving the Saints the win in the second game of the trip.
