Duluth, MN. - The St. Scholastica Women's soccer team completed their third home game of the season tonight, Friday, September 6 against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers. The Pioneers offense found the back of the net on four occasions. The Saints fell 4-0.
How it Happened
1st Half
The Saints started the opening moments of play taking control of the ball and finding open space to make advancements toward the Pioneers net. But the Pioneers' dominant defense would not allow the Saints to get a shot off.
As 10 minutes of play passed, the Pioneers pushed for multiple shots on the net, but starting goalkeeper Gracie Meagher (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) was able to deny two shots. Shortly after the successes of Meagher, she faced an injury, causing a goalkeeper substitution.
The Saints brought up Abigail Shrode (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) to fill the gap. At 16:25, the Pioneers put their first goal in the back of the net.
This was not the end of the Pioneers goal streak, as they scored their second of the game at 31:37. The Saints looked to regroup, helping out backup goalkeeper Shrode. Less than five minutes later, the UWP added to their total with a fluke goal. Pioneers led 3-0 at 37:20.
Both teams battled to take full advantage of the ball in the remaining minutes of the half. The clock wound down, ending the half 3-0 in favor of UWP.
2nd Half
Both teams had a faster pace in the beginning moments. The Pioneers were quick to jump on possession, scoring their 4th goal of the game just 41 seconds into play. The Saints kicked off following the goal, making multiple substitutions to try to switch the momentum in their favor.
Despite the Pioneers taking several shot attempts, the Blue and Gold were able to hold off the Pioneers for upwards of 20 minutes.
Saints goalkeeper Shrode made four valiant saves in the second half. The Saints defenseman stepped up to prevent the Pioneers from capitalizing on their other shot attempts.
Following the goal at 45:41, both teams were unable to tally a goal. The Pioneers took the win 4-0.
