La Crosse, WI.- The St. Scholastica Volleyball team started their doubleheader in La Crosse, WI. Playing the host team University of Wisconsin- La Crosse at 1 p.m. Friday, September 20. This was a four-set match where the Saints ultimately came out on top winning three sets to one.
How it Happened
Set 1
The Saints started set one with back and forth points, fighting with the Eagles for a lead. With Saints trailing 7-5, Kaitlyn Jones attacked for a side-out point, which was followed by a serve from CC Siebel to tie the match 7-7.
The Saints scored many of their points from errors on the Eagles' side, bringing them back into a point for point battle. The Saints began to fall behind until Ava Swangstue (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) earned a kill that gave the Saints momentum for a three point run against UWL. The middle blocker Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS) stayed hot and restarted the Saints fire with a kill at 19-22 putting the team back in the game.
After a four point run to tie the game 22-22 with a service ace from Grace Myhre (Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central HS) the Saints fell just short of victory and ended the set 22-25.
Set 2
Set two began similar to set one with a fight for the lead as both teams went back and forth for points. With kills from Mikala Peterson (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) and Jones, on top of many errors from the Eagles, the Saints held a close two point game throughout.
After a kill from Seibel and a serve from Grace Myhre (Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central HS) the Saints were back to being tied with the Eagles at 18-18. Seibel had a quick kill at 23-23 which led the Saints to finish out the last two points of the game for a 25-23 set victory over UWL.
Set 3
Having momentum from a victory in set two, the St. Scholastica volleyball team started off set three with a 3-0 run over the Eagles. The Saints remained in the lead at 5-2 after a huge outside swing from Peterson.
After regaining momentum from a huge block by Baribeau and Jones, the Saints went on a four point run that included two service aces for Baribeau to lead over the Eagles 14-12.
After a few more tough battles for points, the Saints middle Swangstue put the ball away to allow the team to go on another four point run to stay ahead 20-14. The set was ended by a kill from Seibel to win the set 25-16.
Set 4
The Saints held their power and enthusiasm entering set four and started off with a lead of 6-1. The Eagles were struggling to play consistently, allowing the Saints to capitalize on points and continue to lead throughout the set.
Back to back kills for the Saints by Peterson and Jones, put the team ahead with a margin of nine points (17-8). St. Scholastica continued to put the ball away and had two big kills from Swangstue and Cassidy Lustig () to increase the teams lead to 22-14. After more errors on the Eagles side, the Saints took the set with a kill from Jones to win 25-17 in the set and the match.
