Volleyball Falls in Game Two at La Crosse Tri

La Crosse, WI- The St. Scholastica Volleyball team played the second game of their doubleheader on Friday, September 20 at 5 p.m. against Nebraska Wesleyan University. The Saints fell just short of victory in a tight three-set match. 

How it Happened

Set 1

Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS) had two amazing kills early in the first set to make it a tie game of 2-2 with the Prairie Wolves. The game was back and forth for many points from the front row, Mikala Peterson (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) and Ava Swangstue (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS), who put the ball away to keep the game going. A service ace followed shortly after by Kaitlyn Jones to tie the game 7-7.

Libero, Bryn Zeigler, was all across the floor making plays to try and keep the Saints in close range of the Prairie Wolves. With her great efforts, the hitters in front row were able to keep throwing down kills to help the team's servers stay behind the line. 

With a service ace from Natalie Yackley (New Ulm, Minn./New Ulm HS), the Saints pulled ahead late in set one with a 18-15 lead. The Saints fell to Nebraska Wesleyan University shortly after with a final score for set one of 25-21. 

Set 2 

Peterson and Swangstue started off set two with fire under them, giving the team a lead of 6-4 by staying aggressive in the front row. The Saints began to fall behind by small margins after a few back to back errors trailing 9-6.

With a big Kill from Jones, the Saints were right back in the game, and going on a three point run with Baribeau behind the serving line. The Saints were able to tie the game again at 13-13 with kills from Swangstue and Peterson, assisted by Myhre. 

The Saints were able to battle until the end but ended just short of victory with a tough loss of 25-22 to conclude set two. 

Set 3

Set three started off going point for point with the Prairie Wolves where neither team could seem to pull ahead. With a big block from the Saints, they were able to pull ahead at the 7-6 mark. 

The game continued to go point for point throughout the set with kills from Jones, Swangstue, and Baribeau. The Saints however fell to the Prairie Wolves again in the third set 25-14 to end the match with a 0-3 loss. 

Up Next

After a long wait, the Saints will play their home opener on Tuesday, September 24 at 7 p.m. against Augsburg University in a MIAC match. The game will be held at the REIF in the Burns Wellness Commons.
