Box Score Moorhead, Minn – The St. Scholastica Men's soccer team traveled west to Moorhead MN. today to compete in their first MIAC Conference game of the season.
Following a long road trip west, the Saints began their MIAC games against the Cobbers of Concordia Moorhead, today, Tuesday, September 17. The game began at 4:00 p.m.
How it happened
1st Half
Two teams in the MIAC with difficult starts to their season came together to see who could get an edge first. The first half of the game was evenly fought, with possession switching sides frequently.
Each team was taking advantage of what situations the defense presented, managing to tally a slurry of shots in the first half of play. Both teams were able to attempt five shots on net.
But, in the 28th minute, Gabriel Marchesoni (Surrey, BC, CA) got the ball from Ayub Mohammad and attacked the net on the left side, beat the goalie, and secured the first goal for the Saints nearing the end of the first half. The first half would end with a score of 1-0, Saints up as they went into the second half.
2nd Half
The second half ended with the Saints in the lead by one goal. Not long into the second half, the Cobbers would have their best scoring opportunity of the day, but goalkeeper Ben Hallberg (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) was quick enough to stop the shot, keeping the Saints lead at one.
In the 57th minute, Elijah Seehof-Flory (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) connected with the net and beat the keeper to put the Saints up 2-0 early in the second half.
The shots in the second half were significantly more one-sided with the Saints only recording one shot on goal, whereas the Cobbers were in desperation mode, trying everything they could, putting up nine shots.
The score would remain the same through 90 minutes of play, and the Saints would record their first shutout and MIAC win of the season.
