Box Score Cedar Rapids, Iowa. - The Saint Scholastica Men's soccer team was defeated today in a close matchup against the Kohawks from Coe College. The Kohawks scored an early goal in the first half, and although the Saints' offense had several attempts to even the score, a late goal for Coe College would be the difference maker, as the Saints fell by a score of 2-0.
How it Happened
1st Half
The Kohawks broke the 0-0 tie early, as a goal at 4:43 that came on an assist from a free kick, gave Coe College an early 1-0 lead over CSS.
Saint Scholastica showed its defensive resilience after surrendering the opening goal of the game, with the Kohawks only getting one look at the net that kept the game deadlocked at 1-0 for the remainder of the half.
Later in the half, the Saints got its first look on the offensive side, as a shot by Gabriel Marchesoni would be denied by the Kohawks goalkeeper, sending the game to halftime with the Saints trailing 1-0.
2nd Half
Kyle Schmidt (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) put an early shot on goal for the Saints at 51:56 to try to even the score, but another crucial save would keep the Saints off the board, with Coe College still clinging to a one-goal lead.
Later in the half, after much back-and-forth from the Saints and Kohawks, the Saints had a key chance to even the score on a free kick, but the Kohawks defense blocked shots from Marchesoni and Parker Chastey (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld HS) to keep CSS scoreless.
In the 80th minute, after a free kick from the Saints, the Kohawks were able to find the back of the net for the second time of the afternoon, extending its lead to 2-0 over CSS.
After a red card was handed out against the Kohawks, the Saints offense went on to try chip away at its deficit, with Chastey again trying to end the scoring drought on a shot, but to no avail as the score remained at 2-0.
As the clock ticked to the 90th minute, the Saints were unable to put one in net, as the Kohawks came away victorious, defeating the Saints by a final score of 2-0.
